Points, Games & Sets â The Ladder
Tennis markets are built on its unusual scoring system. Understand the ladder from first point to the game, and every in-play price starts to make sense.
Love
Every game starts at zero, called "love".
First Point
Win one point and the score moves to 15.
Second Point
Two points won takes you to 30.
Third Point
One more point wins the game â unless it's 40-40 (deuce).
Game Won
From deuce, a player needs two points in a row.
Games â Set
First to six games wins the set, with a two-game lead. At 6-6 most events play a tiebreak to decide it.
Sets â Match
Most tour matches are best of three sets. Men's Grand Slam singles are best of five, which gives the stronger player more time to recover.
Serve & Break
Holding serve is the norm. A "break" â winning the opponent's service game â is usually what moves set and match odds the most.
Pick the Right Market
From a simple winner pick to game-by-game predictions â here's what each tennis market asks, ranked by how much there is to learn.
Match Winner (Moneyline)
Who wins the match. If a player retires injured, settlement depends on the platform's retirement rule â always check it.
Set Betting
Predict the exact set score, e.g. 2-0 or 2-1. Higher odds because you need both the winner and the margin right.
Game Handicap
The favourite gets a minus-game handicap (e.g. -4.5). They must win by more games than that across the match.
Total Games Over / Under
Will the match have more or fewer games than the line (e.g. 22.5)? Close matchups and tiebreaks push totals up.
First Set Winner
Settles after just one set â shorter wait, but early nerves and serve rhythm make it less predictable.
Live / Point-by-Point
Next game winner, next point and live match odds. Prices move every rally, so these need the most discipline.
Same Players, Different Courts
Surface is one of the biggest factors in tennis. A player's ranking tells you less than their record on today's court.
Hard Court
Medium-fast and predictable bounce. Rewards all-round games and is the most common surface on tour.

- All-rounders
- Tiebreaks
- Fairly common
Clay Court
Slow with a high bounce. Long rallies, more breaks of serve, and an edge for patient baseliners.

Grass Court
Fast with a low skid. Big servers thrive, breaks are rarer and sets often go to tiebreaks.

Four Grand Slams, Three Surfaces
The calendar rotates between surfaces, so form carries over between some events more than others.
Australian Open
Season opener in Melbourne. Early-season fitness and heat are big talking points.
Roland-Garros
The French Open in Paris â the toughest physical test on the slowest surface.
Wimbledon
London's grass-court major. A short grass season means limited recent form data.
US Open
Final major of the year in New York, often with fatigue after a long season.
See the Margin Inside Any Match
In a tennis match there are only two outcomes, so the implied chances should add up to 100%. They usually add to a bit more â that extra is the margin built into the price.
- 1Enter both players' decimal odds.
- 2See each player's implied winning chance.
- 3A lower margin means a fairer price for you.

Six Things to Check Before Any Match
đ Surface Record
Compare each player's win rate on today's surface, not their overall ranking.
đ¯ Serve Stats
First-serve percentage and service games held predict how many breaks to expect.
đ¤ Head-to-Head
Some styles simply trouble others. Check past meetings â ideally on the same surface.
𩹠Fitness & Schedule
A long five-setter yesterday or a recent injury can matter more than form.
đĄī¸ Conditions
Heat, wind, altitude and indoor vs outdoor all change ball speed and rally length.
đŧ Your Limits
Set a budget per session and never chase a lost set by raising stakes.
Tennis Betting FAQs
It depends on the platform's retirement rule. Some settle the match-winner market in favour of the player who advances, others void bets unless a set or the full match was completed. Check the rules on your ID before placing a bet.
A game handicap adds or removes games from a player's total. If you pick a favourite at -3.5 games, they must win at least four more games than their opponent over the whole match for the bet to win.
Grass and fast hard courts favour big servers and produce more tiebreaks. Clay slows the ball, leads to longer rallies and more breaks of serve. A player's surface record often matters more than overall ranking.
When a set reaches 6-6, most events play a tiebreak: players alternate serves and the first to seven points with a two-point lead wins the set 7-6.
Live markets move after almost every point, which makes them fast and harder to manage. Beginners usually learn more by starting with pre-match winner or total games markets.
